A Look in the Mirror
In a recording studio, imperfections can be perfected. Onstage however, you are in your rawest form. There are no do-overs.
Throughout the entire COVID-19 Pandemic, our production company, BNY, took on more live streaming and pre-recorded audio/video projects. Many churches would record their Sunday services during the week and send us their A/V files to be edited and mixed.
During this time, I heard many worship team members mention that they didn’t like how they looked on camera. There were a couple of takeaways for me in hearing these remarks. Firstly, we are all our own worst critics. College Football Hall of Fame inductee, former player, coach and analyst Lou Holtz said, “You're never as good as everyone tells you when you win, and you're never as bad as they say when you lose.” Secondly, how we appear on camera is, most likely, the same way we look on the platform every Sunday, whether we’re on video or not.
I encourage any artist or worship team I work with to record their rehearsals. This is a great way to learn. Many of them will send me their videos to watch and critique when I can’t be there in person.
Like looking into the mirror and seeing things about ourselves that we’d like to change, we must also examine our onstage performance. As mentioned in my previous post, we can always find things to improve. Instead of looking at yourself with discouragement about your areas of weakness, be encouraged to know that you can perfect your craft and strengthen the talents that you have been entrusted with!
