The 3 P’s
I like to call it the The 3 P’s in Performing & Practical Worship Leading
These 3 P’s all take place well before you ever take the stage.
The first P is Purpose
Everything that’s done onstage should be done with a purpose.
From the arrangement of the music to the message you share and how you deliver it, to your movement onstage and how you put a setlist together - it all needs to be done with purpose.
Not everything needs to be scripted down to a “T,” but everything should be well thought out. Make a plan and brainstorm. Don’t be afraid to take chances. Get creative and imagine what you see yourself doing or saying during your performance.
The next P is Preparation
Once you have your purpose as to what you’re going to do, you need to prepare.
Work on the musical arrangements, learn your parts really well and get comfortable with the movement.
Prepare different emotional elements for the audience to experience and connect with in your show.
There should be both musical and visual contrast in your show. All of which needs to be prepared ahead of time and not a just few minutes before you take the stage as you throw together your setlist.
The final P is Practice
Now that you have a purpose for why you’re doing this and the preparation to back that, you’re ready to practice, practice, practice!
You need to be comfortable in your own skin and feel right at home onstage. Oftentimes, I see too many artists acting like they’re a guest on the stage rather than being the host. Everyone in the audience should then be a houseguest to YOUR party.
The best thing is you can do all of this preparation and practice from the comfort of your own home! That way, by the time you take the stage, you will feel natural and confident as you bring the audience on the journey with you.
So, work on the 3P’s - Purpose, Preparation and Practice and then you can truly own your onstage performance!
