The Rhythm Guitarist

The Rhythm Guitarist blog of Purpose Live - a live show producer / live performance coach based on Nashville, Tennessee.

I believe there are two main forms of entertainment that unite the world – music and soccer. In the next several posts, I’ll be comparing each band member’s position to that of a soccer player’s.

Today’s post is mainly for the rhythm guitarists, but everyone can learn something. Maybe this can help a band know exactly what to look for when shopping for a new guitarist. But if you are a guitarist yourself, put the guitar down and let’s get to it!

Rhythm guitarists are the Top of the Diamond. You drive the band. You are the first of defensive players. When your team is on offense, you move forward and sit at the top of the diamond shape that is formed by the defenders. When your team is defending, you generally flatten out and play as a single unit with your other defenders. You are the rhythm! You need to be able to keep the timing and help drive the song. Your guitar tone is HUGE! A rhythm guitarist with great tones can make a song, but on the flip side terrible tones can break a song. The rhythm is the melody that can add so much and sound amazing, but tones can also be so bad that it sounds awful. So be sure to dial-in your guitar tones and tighten-up your playing and performing.
