The Bassist

I believe there are two main forms of entertainment that unite the world – music and soccer. In the next several posts, I’ll be comparing each band member’s position to that of a soccer player’s.

Today’s post is “All about that bass,” but everyone can learn something. Maybe this can help a band know exactly what to look for when searching for a bassist. But if you are a bassist yourself, stop slappin’ the stings and lets go!

Bassists are compared to the sweeper in soccer – the last line of defense before the goalkeeper. You typically have a special bond with the drummer, just like the sweeper does with his goalie. You are the band’s anchor. You must be able to hold things down. Drums and bass need to be locked in. When they are together sitting in the pocket, they can give the song life. Essentially, the drummer’s kick drum provides the punch, and the bass carries it out. But when wrong notes are played on a booming bass, there is no hiding it! You need to know your parts and play them to perfection!
