The Lead Singer

I believe there are two main forms of entertainment that unite the world – music and soccer. In the last several posts, I’ve been comparing each band member’s position to that of a soccer player’s.

The Lead SInger blog of Purpose Live - a live show producer / live performance coach based on Nashville, Tennessee.

Today’s post is primarily for lead singers, but everyone can learn something. Maybe this can help a band know exactly what to look for when making a transition to a new lead singer. If you are a front-person yourself, give those vocal cords a rest and let’s get right to it!

Lead Singers are the Center Halfback in soccer. A lot of times this position is filled by the star of the team. You may not score all the goals, but you are the playmaker. You feed the ball to your striker and support them while on the attack. You take a lot of hits and are fouled probably the most as you have possession of the ball frequently. You have great vision of the field and can control the game whether you are helping the defense fend off a corner kick or you are taking a free kick in the attacking third.

You are the leader on stage. You may not drive the bus, you may not make the day-to-day schedule, you may not plan band rehearsals or take the lead in any other capacity, but onstage, the audience expects you to lead. You are the focal point, but you also have to know when to pass the spotlight off to a teammate to let them shine for their moment. You have to be able to speak to the audience. It is a requirement. What you say should be thought out and worked on before you ever take the stage.
