Now that 2020 has finally moved aside, what does this new year bring? What does it look like for us musicians as we awaken from our communal slumber?  Have we in fact been slumbering, or have we been working?

Before the COVID shutdown, 2020 was off to a great start for the live music industry, which followed an amazing previous year. Music executives are predicting a “Roaring Twenties” when live music does return. However, this could bring a new set of challenges. Artists, who are looking to hit the road at the same time, could make it difficult for promoters and venues to decide which acts to bring in and for fans to choose which shows to attend. 

Your live show has always been most significant, whether you realize it or not. Your live show is where YOU, the artist, make the most income and usually find the greatest fulfillment by connecting with music fans.

At the close of 2019, I took a poll of an artist’s revenue. The average of all the act’s income - from both signed and unsigned artists - were as follows:

Many musicians I talk with have never come to the realization just how important putting together a great live show truly is! The music industry itself contributes to the unbalanced focus of artists. However, often times I see too many groups waste so many hours and dollars on studio recordings, radio promotion and other avenues that typically don’t make a return investment. In various concert reviews, concertgoers continue to choose the live experience as their top entertainment choice!
