Own the Gig

Some of the biggest advice I can offer to anyone in music or just in life, is to be fully present where you are!

In my last two blog posts, I talked about the audition process. But what happens after you get the gig?

A big mistake I see many musicians make – whether in the Christian music industry, Mainstream or even in church – is simply not being fully present. This can mean a few different things. I have seen through every stage in life, we are always working towards the next thing. We are told to get good grades in school so we can graduate and go to a good college. We then graduate college with a good degree so we can get a good job that pays well so we can support a family. In the work force, we often look at different wage scales and consider moving to another job that pays maybe a dollar an hour more.

Many musicians have the same mentality. They view their current situation as only a steppingstone for what’s next. The biggest advice I can offer to anyone in music is to be fully present where you are! It may not be where you’re supposed to be forever, but for the time being, this is right where you belong. When the time is right, the right doors will open for you when you’re supposed to move on. Scriptures encourages us to “Give thanks in ALL circumstances, for this is God’s will for you” (I Thessalonians 5:18 NIV).

Take ownership of the position you currently hold. Give yourself to it and even more so to the Lord. In doing so, you will go places and do things you never thought were possible.
