Contrast Amid the Noise - Pt. 1

Are your actions during your performance visually distorting the message you’re trying to convey to the audience?

I am by no means a photographer. Nor have I personally dove into photography very much. But I admire the artistry that so many talented photographers can capture of everyday life.

To my understanding, Noise is a visual distortion in digital photographs. It tends to get worse when shooting in low light settings, and generally most photographers don’t like Noise in their pictures.

Just like Noise in photography, we also really don’t want any “Noise” in our live show – except for what is supposed to be coming out of the loud speakers! To put it another way is that we don’t want anything we are doing visually onstage to distort from the message we’re trying to convey to the audience.

The song is the guide. It acts as a screen-play telling us what to do during the performance. Like any great captivating movie, it must first begin with a great script. The director must understand that the viewers need different experiences throughout the entire film. In an action movie, most people don’t want 120 minutes of just things exploding! They need the action with some humor, plot twists, maybe a love story added in there or an emotional piece. When we go back to the adrenaline rush of high-speed chases and explosions, they are now more impactful. The same applies to your live show.

I may not have heard your music yet, but my guess is that not all of your songs sound alike. Therefore, not all of your songs should look alike. Your live show needs diversity from song to song – both audibly and visually. To best control the Noise in your show is by having more of a contrast – not just between every song, but in EVERY PART of each song. We’ll talk more about Contrast in my next post!
